Battle Royale
This form didn't come from a big company's planning document — it came from a hobby of modding someone else's game. In 2013, Brendan Greene built a mod called "Battle Royale" for ArmA 2's DayZ, in which 100 players dropped in and fought down to one survivor. In 2014 he released a mod under his own name for ArmA 3, which got him noticed and brought him onto the development of H1Z1, and then PUBG came out in March 2017. Six months later, on September 26, 2017, Fortnite entered with the same form — and that one became everyday life for the world. The person who opened the genre and the person who made it mainstream were two different people. As for where the form itself came from, this map draws that connection — the novel and film that already had the same shape (→ Battle Royale, the novel) — as an established account, not a stronger claim.
